The National Weather Service’s San Angelo office, which is responsible for some of the areas hit hardest by Friday’s flooding in Texas, was missing a senior hydrologist, staff forecaster, and meteorologist.

The Weather Service’s nearby San Antonio office, which covers other areas hit by the floods, also had vacancies, including a warning coordination meteorologist. The warning coordination meteorologist left on April 30, after taking the Trump administration early retirement package.

Area meteorologists say the National Weather Service accurately predicted the risk of flooding in Texas and could not have foreseen the extreme severity of the storm.

There was a breakdown between when the warning was issued and how people got it.

There is no flood warning system along the river that would have functioned like a tornado siren.

AccuWeather calls the Hill Country one of the most flash-flood-prone areas of the US because of its terrain and many water crossings.

The US dollar is suffering its worst start to a year in more than five decades.
